¿Cuándo usar present simple y cuándo present continuous?

Regla clave

Usa el present simple para hábitos, rutinas y verdades generales (siempre, normalmente, nunca). Usa el present continuous (am/is/are + -ing) para acciones que están ocurriendo ahora mismo o situaciones temporales que no son permanentes.

PRESENT SIMPLE (hábitos/rutinas)

  • I work in a bank. (trabajo habitual)
  • She drinks coffee every morning.
  • We always go to the beach in summer.
  • He doesn't eat meat. (hábito permanente)
  • The sun rises in the east. (verdad general)

PRESENT CONTINUOUS (ahora/temporal)

  • I'm working from home today. (solo hoy)
  • She's drinking coffee right now.
  • We're staying at a hotel this week.
  • He's not eating much — he's on a diet.
  • It's raining outside. (ahora mismo)

Ejemplos

  • I work in a bank.

    Trabajo en un banco. (mi trabajo habitual)

  • I'm working from home today.

    Hoy estoy trabajando desde casa. (solo hoy)

  • She speaks three languages.

    Ella habla tres idiomas. (habilidad permanente)

  • She is speaking on the phone right now.

    Ella está hablando por teléfono ahora mismo.

  • It usually rains a lot in November.

    Normalmente llueve mucho en noviembre. (rutina estacional)

  • It is raining — bring an umbrella!

    Está lloviendo — ¡coge un paraguas!

Error típico

I am work every day.

I work every day. / I am studying right now.

Para hábitos y rutinas (every day, always, usually), usamos present simple sin -ing. La forma '-ing' solo se usa cuando la acción está ocurriendo en este preciso momento o la situación es temporal. 'I am work' es incorrecto porque mezcla el auxiliar 'am' con la forma base en lugar del participio -ing.

Truco para recordar

Busca las palabras clave. Present simple: always, usually, often, every day/week/year, never, sometimes. Present continuous: now, right now, at the moment, today, this week, currently, look! Listen! Estas palabras señal te dirán casi siempre cuál usar.
